Active pedagogy: the secrets of a successful training workshop

Active pedagogy:
the secrets of a successful training workshop

Overview

The methodologies that make adults learn by doing and how to design a workshop where the room does the thinking, not the slides.

What we will cover

Why most workshops fail, and what the good ones do differently

Everyone agrees adults learn by doing. Almost nobody designs for it. This hour is about the gap between those two facts.

06

The traps

Activity for activity's sake, games that teach nothing, and group work with no debrief — the debrief is where the learning actually happens.

05

Evidence it worked

Evaluation beyond the smiley sheet: observable behaviour, transfer to the job, and the follow-up that makes learning stick.

03

Designing the sequence

The energy curve of a room, the alternation of input and practice, and why twenty minutes of talking costs you the next forty.

04

Facilitation, not presentation

Asking instead of telling, working with silence, the participant who takes the room, and the group that refuses to play.

02

The methodology menu

Case study, role play, simulation, peer teaching, project work, structured games — six families, and the situations where each one is the wrong choice.

01

Start from the objective

Most workshops are built from what the trainer knows, not from what the participant must be able to do afterwards. One test separates the two.

How the session runs

Six movements, then open questions. You will leave with a one-page design canvas you can apply to your next workshop.

00:00 Opening

Why the lecture still dominates training when everyone knows it does not work.

00:08 The objective first

Writing a learning objective precise enough to assess and building backwards from it.

00:16 The methodology menu

The six families of active learning, what each costs in preparation, and when each fits.

00:28 designing the sequence

Timing, energy and alternation: assembling three hours that hold a room's attention.

00:38 facilitation

The moves that keep a group working — and what to do when it stops.

00:50 Evidence & traps

How you know it worked, the five ways it fails, and open Q&A.
